Collection: Third Folio · 1664
These are our plays in the precise Third Folio (second edition) sequence: comedies, (English) histories, tragedies, and Philip Chetwinde’s seven new additions:
Pericles Prince of Tyre;
The Tragedy of Locrine;
The London Prodigal;
The Puritan Widow (of Watling Street);
The History of Thomas Lord Cromwell;
Sir John Oldcastle Lord Cobham; and
A Yorkshire Tragedy
Of these seven, only Pericles remains attributed to Shakespeare. It was popular in its day, outdrawing Antony and Cleopatra, with which it was entered into the Stationers’ Register.
A Yorkshire Tragedy is a one-act once grouped with three others (now lost) into a four-part titled All’s One. Yorkshire is an alarming portrayal of domestic violence, not so new as lamentable and true.
